Paediatric First Aid

The First Aid needs of children vary from those of adults. This course is for anyone over 16-years-old that comes into contact with or works with infants and children. This comprehensive course equips the first aider to administer First Aid to children and infants and covers a wide range of CPR and First Aid skills. On completion, candidates will obtain an RLSS UK Qualification's Level 3 Paediatric First Aid. The Paediatric First Aid is endorsed by CIMSPA and the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum.


RLSS UK is regulated by Ofqual, Qualifications Wales and CCEA in Northern Ireland.

Prerequisites:

Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of taking the assessment. No prior first aid knowledge is required.

Course Content:

A range of subjects are covered including:

  • Understanding the role of the paediatric first aider
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
  • How to assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
  • How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture and a dislocation
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a head, a neck and a back injury
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock
  • How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stun

Assessment:

Paediatric First Aid is Trainer Assessed throughout the course. The assessment should determine a learner’s ability to act safely, promptly and effectively when an emergency occurs at work and to deal with a casualty. All Assessment Criteria in the units must be achieved.

Renewal:

To re-qualify, learners must be assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria in the unit. For Paediatric First Aid this will be the same as the initial course of 12 hours.
